Gift Guide - The Hostess

The holiday party season is upon us! A small gift is a lovely way to thank your hostess and show your appreciation.  I like to give hostess gifts that can be consumed as in a holiday treat (peppermint bark, anyone?), used up like a candle, or passed on as in a wine bag.

Gift Guide - The Hostess
Clockwise: C.Wonder Coasters // Juliska Country Estate Ornament // Tory Burch Desk Calendar // Williams-Sonoma Tartan Wine Covers // Thymes Frasier Fir Candle

In a pinch? Pick up flowers on your way to the party!

Deux Maisons: Setting An Eclectic Table

Just like Lauren, we love to entertain! During the holidays, there seems to be so many extra opportunities for impromptu get-togethers in addition to well-planned parties. With entertaining season in mind, we've put together some ideas for how to set an eclectic (and last minute!) table for you and your guests using items you may already have. Happy hosting!

1. Prints: Magical Mixing & Matching

Whether you have a fulfilled registry of fine China or pieces you picked up here and there, mix and match what you have for a cohesive look. For example, I picked up some John Derian Melamine plates during their Target collaboration a few years back and while they are nothing fancy, they add color and a print to my table. Mix in table cloths and printed or textured napkins to not only quickly change the look of your table, but refine it a little more.

2. High & Low

We love fine China and crystal just as much as the next girl, but we also get just as excited when we come across a great set of vintage glassware or a vintage paper mache tray for layering. Just like Lauren layers in inexpensive clothing in her outfits you can combine "finds" with your finer things; you'll be amazed at how well they work together! Equally affordable and interesting, each "pattern" adds a nice collected element to your table.

3. No Rules!

Do not feel intimidated by entertaining! Allowing your guests to feel comfortable and at home is the only real entertaining rule there is. Make the most of what you have and enjoy reinventing your tabletop!

Emily Butler Interiors: Outfit to Room

In honor of Lauren and Scott's safari trip to Africa, I wanted to use my guest blog post as an opportunity to design the perfect hunting-themed retreat! Using Lauren's outfits in her post What To Wear: Hunting  as inspiration, I've pieced together a space that is both handsome and sophisticated. I think this room includes just enough texture, prints, layering, and zush to soften what is usually a man-centric space. Cozy, no?

Emily Butler, the designer behind Emily Butler Interiors, is a dear friend who moved to soon after we met to NYC to pursue her dream career in interior design.  She is currently a student at Parsons The New School of Design. Girl Around Town: Top 10 Houston Boutiques

Photography by Deidre Schoo

I lived in Nolita in NYC – and it was dangerous. No, we didn’t have robbers and rapists, we had beautiful boutiques that lined my street for blocks – wallets beware. So, when I moved back to Houston I was anxious to see if the boutique business here would be as grand as it was in my old hood – turns out, it is. The thing I love most about the small stores in Houston is that they are all different and you can find unique pieces in each (because who wants to have on the same Banana Republic outfit as your colleague – not me!)  These shops make it point to fill their shelves with pieces that will truly make an outfit you.

Here are some of my favs!

Hemline: With a location in River Oaks and Rice Village you’re never far away from fabulous.

Abejas: I was a loyal customer even when I didn’t live in town. This is a great spot for those with a casual style vibe.

Langford Market: If you have eclectic taste, this is your mecca.

More Than You Can Imagine: This resale shop in River Oaks is to die for – yes, you really can afford that Chole dress you’ve been eyeing.

Cakewalk Style Shop: A heavenly place to shop, as the boutique is as pretty as the clothes themselves.

Coquette: Pricy, but worth it when you find that perfect piece.

Muse: The store may look small, but packs a fashionable punch. They also carry cute home items that make great gifts.

High Gloss: A store all about accessorizing, the unique baubles, scarves and bags I have from this store are the items I get the most compliments on.

Sam and Lilli: Previously 310 Rosemont, their new store resides in West Ave and still carries all the pretty things you love.

Cunningham & Co: Brand new and offering personal shopping this boutique is sure to make waves in H-town. They also carry local designer David Peck, who I just can’t get enough of.

Now get shopping!

What I'm Packing: Africa

Tomorrow we leave for a two week hunting trip in Zimbabwe, Africa! We have planned this trip for over a year now and I can't believe the moment is upon us. Scott is hunting dangerous game - cape buffalo! (I wasn't kidding when I said this was the story of my life!) This eland is from Scott's last last trip in 2005.

Lululemon
It is summer in Zimbabwe with highs in the 90's and lows in the 70's. We will walk up to 10 miles a day tracking wildlife. With that in mind, I am packing work out clothes for day. I purchased the above Lululemon Groove slim fit reversible pants and Free 2 Be sports bra in black.  The long pants will protect my legs from the brush (and tsetse flies!). The boot cut leg will also cover my oh so not stylish hiking boots. I'm topping this look with an assortment of army green and brown tank tops from Gap and Old Navy.

For night, I'm taking a travel friendly cotton maxi-dress, safari green romper, and this animal print button down to wear with jeggings. Since laundry is done every day, we can pack light. I'm keeping my jewelry simple - gold studs, a couple bangles and this charm necklace my sister gave me last Christmas.

The most important item I'm packing is bug repellent. You'll never guess what is recommended - Avon Skin So Soft! Who knew?!

My internet connectivity abroad is iffy. I'll share pictures as I can. In the meantime, I am really excited (and grateful) for the guests posts lined up!

Tips: Closet Organization

Do you ever feel like you have nothing to wear? My friend Lindsey was frustrated with her closet so we tackled it one Friday afternoon. We purged 50+ items!! With all the new space, Lindsey could actually see her clothes and shop her closet.

Here are my 3 tips to closet organization!

Tools of the Trade

The following three items are essential to closet organization!
  • Garment Rack - Closet organization involves taking everything out of your closet. A rolling garment rack makes it easy to comb thru what you have and also prevents making a giant mess (and headache).
  • Laundry Baskets - Use your laundry baskets to organize items you are discarding into alterations/drycleaning, donation, and sell piles.
  • Velvet Hangers - Not only do velvet hangers (love these) keep your clothes from falling off, they look good too! Having consistent hangers maximizes space, makes it easier to see your clothes, and is visually appealing.

Have a couple trash bags handy for all the drycleaners' hangers and bags.

Edit and Re-Edit

Utilizing the rolling rack, take your clothes out section by section. Hang them according to sleeve length, style, and color. Do a once over on each item for stains and rips. Ask yourself: Do I like it? Does it fit? Do I wear it?  If the answer is no to any question, discard it! Move quickly, if you get hung up on an item keep it and move on. As you hang the clothes back in your closet, make a final decision.

Group like items together. As we went thru Lindsey's closets we found 6 black cardigans! We kept 3 - one beaded, one crew neck, and one v-neck. Like many of us, Lindsey had a large collection of t-shirts particularly in white. We whittled down her collection to a reasonable number.

Donate, Sell, and Trash
  • Donate any items that are out of style, out of season, or worn out. Find your local Goodwill here. I know the bride promised you would wear that dress again, but let's be honest - you won't! Donate your 27 dresses here.
  • Trash the obvious items with rips or stains. And please, no one wants your old swimsuits or unmentionables.

Lindsey made $47 at Plato's Closet and Designer Exchange accepted 8 items. Though the biggest payoff was the new found space and the great feeling of accomplishment that comes with being organized!

What To Wear: Hunting

This weekend kicks off deer season in Texas.  I never hunted until the day I met Scott. He guided me on my first buck! We now hunt together a couple times a year at his boss's ranch. I love sitting in a blind and watching nature. It's very peaceful. This is my "glamour shot" since it was taken the morning after, which allowed for primping.

Get the Look!

Ranch Wear Blues
Top: J.Crew // Vest: J.Crew // Jeans: J. Brand (similar here) // Boots: Chippewa

Ranchwear black & red
Top: J.Crew (similar here) // Vest: Gap // Jeans: J Brand  // Boots: Frye

The LL Bean Hunter's Tote Bag is essential. Mine is monogrammed in orange. It's great for carrying your ear protection, optics, and magazines!

Happy Hunting!
