Happy Halloween

Don't you just love homemade Halloween costumes?! Circa 1984, I was a unicorn. Today, I'm wearing my DIY Zoe Karssen bat tee with black J.Crew Minnie pants to work. I'll switch to green jeans or black leather leggings tonight to pass out candy.

Sporting this Halloween bling courtesy of my sweet sister!

I made this classic Halloween treat last week for a work function. Layer crushed Oreo's (I used a mini prep food processor), instant jello pudding, and whipped cream. Top with a final layer of Oreo, add gummy worms, and Voila! You've got "dirt"!

Have a spooktacular day!

David Peck Collection

David Peck is a forerunner in the movement for socially responsible design. His collection named "CrOp" is short for "creative opportunities". David is committed to local manufacturing and minimal environmental impact. His factory is located right here in Houston (above a popular bar, who knew?).

Last Friday, I had the pleasure of touring the David Peck Collection showroom. It was amazing to see the clothes for SS 2013 being made right before my eyes. Annina, Affiliate Manager, gave myself and Karli of Fashion Billie a tour of the factory and then we played dress up! Here are a few of my favorite looks from the FW 2012 collection.

Sweater Weather

Fall arrived in Houston! The temperatures finally dropped. I celebrated by breaking in this houndstooth sweater. I wore it Friday and Saturday. Don't judge! I kept the chambray/houndstooth combo the same and switched up the bottoms. On Friday, I wore denim jeggings and black heels to a meeting. Then went casual the remainder of the weekend in black leggings and flat boots. Take this outfit from day to night by adding leather leggings and high heels.

I also wore my favorite Kate Spade sweatshirt (last seen here) which has been in constant weekend wear rotation since I got it.

What I Wore: Leather Shorts

I've been on a quest for the perfect pair of leather shorts. Since I wasn't sure how often I would wear them, I wasn't willing to spend a lot. I found several ones that were cheap but looked it.  I was thrilled to stumble upon the these TopShop faux leather shorts. They are the perfect combination of high quality and low price! The leather is very soft and you would never guess they were faux. I can't wait to pair them with patterned black tights this Winter.

Blouse: J.Crew  (love this one) // Shorts: TopShop (note the size chart, they run small!) // Pumps: Steve Madden (similar here)

I wore this outfit to a friend's wedding shower Saturday night. We spent the majority of the night outdoors so the shorts and breezy top kept me cool and comfortable. Equipment popularized the silk shirt. However, I find their's to be a bit too baggy and long in the arms, not to mention pricey!  This J.Crew Blythe blouse comes in petite. It gives the same billowy look without overwhelming a smaller frame. Gap and Old Navy offer affordable versions too.

Bracelets: Linea Pelle, BaubleBar, David Yurman // Clutch: custom alligator (perk of a hunting husband!) // Nails: OPI

Lookbook: The Denim Dress

Dresses are instant outfits. They take the guesswork out of pairing pieces. My friend Mary wore a denim shirtdress with flat boots the other night. It took her effortlessly from our meeting to dinner and drinks. This look works just as easily for casual Friday as for the mom around town.
Have you heard of bootights? As the weather cools, add this all-in-one sock + tight to your boots. Mary had darling argyle socks peeking out of hers!

Tie One On

It's beginning to feel like Fall in Texas. Now is the time to bring out one of my favorite Fall accessories - the scarf! I always wear my scarf one of two ways (boring!). We can all benefit from a refresher of last year's YouTube sensation by Wendy's Lookbook. I can't wait to try out a new look with my leopard scarf!

C.Jane is one of my favorite boutiques in Austin. I stopped in last weekend and am regretting not purchasing the ADA wrap belt. There are so many ways to wear this versatile belt! C.Jane has several colors in stock including natural tan, shimmery bronze (my favorite!), and a light gray snakeskin. Also available online here.

Tips: Savvy Shopping

image via Pinterest

When it comes to shopping, putting in a little effort can result in big savings! Here are 3 tips to save you money.

Ask for Discounts

Read your receipt! Many retailers offer a one time price adjustment within 7-14 days of purchase. Particularly when I purchase a more expensive item, I watch the website to see if it goes on sale. If it does, I ask for it.

We've all been there. You buy something one day and the next you get an email announcing 25% off. UGH! Don't fret, many retailers will honor the discount if you ask nicely. Gap, Old Navy, Piperlime, and even J.Crew will apply promotional codes to your recent or in transit purchases. They often say "just this once" but we know better ;)

Be Loyal

Membership has it's perks! Many retailers offer reward programs and exclusive discounts to cardholders. Do NOT open a credit card every time you make a purchase but it does make sense to be a card carrying member at your most frequented shops.

Develop relationships with the sales personnel! This is the key to personalized service, first notice of sales, private shopping events, and discounts. At J.Crew Houston Galleria, I always shop with the very personal stylist, David Domangue. In addition to picking out clothes and putting together outfits, a stylist can assist you with finding sold out items and is more likely to accommodate special requests i.e. accept returns on final sales items.

Shop Smart

I favor websites that offer free shipping & returns (Piperlime, Shopbop) and no tax (Bloomingdale's for Texans). Many retailers carry the same designers. Shop around to find the best price or sale. These two websites do the work for you:

  • Shop It To Me is an online personal shopper service. Select your designers and sizes, and they send you personalized sale alerts. They often have private sales exclusive to members.
  • ShopStyle is a comparison shopping tool.  With one click, it searchs all the retailers you love. Results show you which stores carry the product including size availability and direct links to purchase. The sales alert function is an added bonus!

Finally, try eBay! I find great deals on sold out and last season items on eBay. It's also a great place to find the look for less (ahem, J.Crew bib necklace!).

The more you save, the more you can shop!

What I Wore: Game Day

I didn't make it to the Red River Shootout this year, but that didn't keep me from sporting burnt orange all weekend long. The belt may have been a little much for running errands but it would have fit right in at the Texas State Fair!

Top: Splendid // Skirt: Gap (similar here and here) // Boots: Vince Camuto (last seen here) // Purse: Mary Nichols // Sunglasses: Ray Ban 'New Small Wayfarer' // Necklace: Banana Republic

Bangles: Eliza Page (similar here), Banana Republic // Belt: Harold Powell (love this one) // Nailpolish: OPI Lincoln Park After Dark

We went to Austin for the weekend to celebrate Scott's birthday. I trailed this car on the return trip. Go Horns! Notice the traffic? Took me 4.5 hours to get home!

DIY - Bat Tee

Remember this bat tee? The original post was written weeks in advance so by press time, it was sold out.  I hate that! So this weekend I decided to make my own. It turned out pretty good for my first DIY!

I bought basic white tees and fabric paint in black and metallic silver from my local Michael's. I googled bat stencil images and printed out the above. Then Scott decided to free hand a copy of the Zoe Karssen bat.

He traced his drawing on a piece of foam and cut it out with a razor. We placed cardboard in the shirt to prevent bleeding and provide support. Clothespins held the shirt taut.

We mixed a little black paint with the metallic silver. Remember you can always add more black but you can't take it away! I painted the bat form with a foam brush and then pressed it onto the shirt. The foam was rather thick so Scott pressed the edges down with a  knife to ensure a crisp outline.

We varied the pressure and paint amount to achieve the faded look. The first one was too dark, the second too light. The third will be just right!

Want a bat tee of your own? My sister snagged one. Email me for details!

Wild One

Leopard is a tried and true Fall classic. This is one trend you can be confident will return year after year. I treat leopard (really all animal print) as a neutral, it goes with everything! Here are some budget friendly pieces to easily incorporate this trend into your wardrobe.

Add this J.Crew bangle or scarf to any outfit for an instant update! (scarf available in store)

Add a leopard print shoe to an all black ensemble for a unexpected punch! From L to R: Madewell Leopard Skimmers // Madewell Old Town Boot //Nine West Martina Pump (more styles here, here, and here)

I tried on this Amanda Uprichard silk dress (and this Rory Beca) at C.Jane in Austin. The fitted top flatters a small bust and the slightly flared skirt hides thighs. Pair with black strappy heels and you are ready for date night or girls night out! When the temps drop, toughen it up with a black leather jacket and booties

Stayed tuned this week for more feline picks!

The House That Scott Built

My husband is extremely talented. In honor of his birthday today, I thought I'd brag on him a little and share some of his handiwork. When we first started dating, I had taken an antique bench out on approval for the end of my bed. Scott told me I didn't need to buy it, he would just make me a copy!

This Pottery Barn look alike is complete with a hidden drawer divided into organized sections. Scott painted the interior his signature color, seafoam!

Scott created this wall of buillt-ins for Valentine's one year. What was once wasted space, now provides a lot of storage and a place for our tv.

Most recently, he built a headboard for our master bedroom. I picked out the fabric and he did the rest!

Happy Birthday Love!

Fashion Statement

I love the statement sweatshirts designers Kate Spade and Zoe Karssen debuted this Fall! Houston finally got some cool weather this weekend so I was able to break out this Garance Dore pullover. The slightly off shoulder and shrunken fit go perfectly with leggings. (Note: If you want a slightly slouchy look and longer length go up a size.)

Blair Eadie styled hers with boyfriend jeans & leopard heels for a casual glam look.

Oh la la!! Need I say more?

Hailing all New Yorkers, these mittens are a must!

What statement will you make this Fall?
